Hitchhiking the World

Even though it was more than a Year now that I finished my trip by returning to Lithuania on a distinctly rainy 2011.04.08 Lithuanian day. In the course of my travels my aims and reasons for continuing changed a few times. At first I had a rather detailed plan to get to New Zealand and back home with hitchhiking. While I was traveling in South-East Asia though, I changed my mind about this. I decided to go all the way around the world. One of the reasons was doubling in ferry prices from Japan to Russia, which was in my plan on the way back home. Another was a thought about a possibility of  hitchhiking on a sailboats in South Pacific, which I later on had to abandon. After a while I decided not to have any detailed plans and just take it as it comes, having only a general outline for my travel overall.

My reasoning for having and continuing this trip also changed somewhat. The main one became accomplishing a world trip by hitchhiking. Couldn’t help, but use planes though to cross oceans. Another reason was the surprise factor of this way of travel. It was hardly predictable how it will go and how you couldn’t be certain for even one day of traveling, since it depended a lot on the kind of rides I would get and the kind of people I was meeting. All that sometimes brought a lot of pleasant experiences. I wouldn’t have it all being shut in a mundane circle of everyday life back at home. After arriving to North America I had a drop in motivation for continuing all the way to South through Latin America. Even though I had an awesome recharge after staying in a Magic Mountain buddist community in high desert of Arizona for a month and a half. I still had what one would name as a culture shock or more like disappointment when I went down to Latin America. But right now I wish I had more will to go through with it ^^ At the border of Guatemala and El Salvador I chose to turn the direction of my hitchhiking to Lithuania and after another month was back home thus completing my World Trip!

Even though it’s late by more than a Year, I would like to say my thanks to Everyone I met on my way around the world: people who gave me a ride, those who even acted as my guides and all those who supported me in many different ways. Without all of You this wouldn’t have been possible. I wouldn’t be constantly having all the nice flashbacks from my trip without You! ^^
Next up should be Africa! Though nothing as grand as it was with this trip.

Some statistics of my trip:

Vehicles used – 884

Land distance covered – 60150

Water distance covered – 370

Air distance covered – 23450

Books read – 19

Days spent – 406

Now, all these replies are long overdue. I wasn’t checking this page of my blog much and only looked at comments on my wordpress dashboard and overlooked… Anyway I should update this page some time soon. I after all plan to go on with my trip even after New Zealand 😉
